The Importance of Backing up Your Files

So last week my computer suddenly decided to stop working. My computer has never had any real issues, so I was surprised when, out of nowhere, it just completely shut off and I couldn’t get it to turn back on.

While it was a major inconvenience, it wasn’t the end of the world. I keep most of my files on external hard-drives and many files on google-drive so I can access them from anywhere. I took my computer into the Apple store and found out it was a graphics card that hard stopped working. It took 4 days, but my computer is now back in my hands and all data intact.

It’s a good reminder to keep your files backed up. Storing your data on external hard drives serves two purposes.

  1. Back-up your files in case your computer crashes –
Having your files on an external hard drive or a cloud storage frees up the worry of when your computer is going to crash. Everyone I know has, at some point in time lost files due to a computer malfunction. Don’t let it happen to you.
  2. Storing on an external drive keeps your computer running smoother
Possibly the reason my computer has never given me trouble is because I keep the majority of my files (And all my big files) on external hard drives. This means the computer has plenty of free space and doesn’t have to work so hard.

Having multiple backups is the best way to avoid loosing your files. Each year I get a new terabyte hard drive to store everything I film, shoot, edit, or create. I back these up on yet another hard drive every few months (or before traveling), just in case something happens to that hard drive.

Find a system that works for you and stick to it. You’ll be happy you did on that one day in the future when your little working machine decides to go on strike.
